Automobile insurance is meant to safeguard the investment you have made on your car. It is smart planning that can help protect you from expensive, sometimes devastating surprises that can and do, unfortunately, happen every day on our roadways.
Auto insurance can also:
- Pay for medical bills after an accident
- Shield you from the costly damages of an accident-related lawsuit
- Guard the valuable assets you've worked hard to collect (such as your home, retirement funds, stock or bond investments, etc.)
- Protect you from uninsured or under-insured motorists
- Pay for damage repairs due to theft, vandalism, or natural disasters

Whenever you drive, wherever you go, the right insurance policy helps get you there with confidence. Auto insurance provides financial protection for the risks you and your family face every day. Unfortunately, not all accidents are simply fender benders. In fact, more than three million people are injured in auto accidents each year. Many people assume that all auto insurance is the same, only to find they are inadequately protected when an accident occurs. Don't let that happen to you. Contact us for advice on the right coverage for your vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, vans, recreational vehicles, or trailers. We offer competitive quotes from leading national insurance companies that you can trust to provide the coverage that you need.
Minnesota law requires that all personal passenger vehicles have the following types of coverage:
Liability Coverage - Pays when you are found legally liable for unintentional bodily and property damage to others.
Personal Injury Protection - Commonly called PIP, it helps pay your medical costs in the event of bodily injury.
Uninsured/Under insured Motorist - Insures that you are still protected if the person at fault has inadequate or no insurance.
Most drivers also add one or more of the optional coverages listed below for better protection.
Collision Coverage - Pays for physical damage caused to your vehicle due to a collision.
Comprehensive Coverage - Pays for non-collision losses including fire, theft, glass breakage and vandalism.
Full Safety Glass Coverage - Pays for the repair or replacement of damaged/broken windows or windshield without a deductible being due.
Rental Reimbursement - Pays a certain amount towards the use of a rental vehicle when your vehicle is inoperable due to a covered loss.
Towing and Labor - Pays toward the cost of hiring a tow truck when your vehicle breaks down.
Auto Loan/Lease - Also known as GAP insurance, pays the difference between the actual cash value of the vehicle and the current outstanding
balance on your loan or lease in the event of a total loss.
Motorcycle, ATV, and Snowmobile Insurance Coverages
Choosing the right insurance policy is much like choosing the right motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile. You want it to fit your needs and lifestyle, but at the same time be within your budget. Although most states require you to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage, other types of coverage are usually optional. It is very important to note that the basic motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile policy does not provide PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage as would be included in an auto policy, nor will the PIP coverage on your auto policy cover you if you are involved in an accident while on your motorcycle. In order to find out what coverage is best for you, it is important to understand all the options available.

Liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage that you may cause to other people involved in an accident. It doesn't cover you or your motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile. Find out if your coverage includes Guest Passenger Liability, which provides protection in the event that a passenger is injured on the motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile. Whether or not this is included depends on the laws of your state and the company issuing the policy.
Collision insurance covers damage to your motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile if you are involved in an accident. Your insurance company pays for damages, minus your deductible, caused when you collide with another vehicle or object. Collision insurance usually covers the book value of the motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile before the loss occurred.
Comprehensive coverage pays for damages caused by an event other than a collision, such as fire, theft or vandalism. However, just like collision coverage, your insurance company will pay for damages, minus your deductible, and will cover only the book value of the motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile. Keep in mind most comprehensive and collision coverages will only cover the factory standard parts on your motorcycle. If you decide to add on any optional accessories such as chrome parts, a custom paint job, trailers or sidecars, you should look into obtaining additional or optional equipment coverage.
Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist coverage
Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist coverage covers damages to you and your property caused by another driver who either doesn't have insurance (uninsured) or enough insurance coverage (under-insured).
Boat and Personal Watercraft Insurance Coverages
The personal property coverage of your homeowners policy might cover a small boat, motor and trailer (usually for $1,500 or less in physical damage). It should be noted that coverage for your liability risk is limited. Insurers generally provide liability insurance on small sailboats (26 feet or less) and powerboats with small motors (50 hp for inboard and inboard/outboard and 25 HP for outboard motors).
However, a boat of any significant size will be excluded from your homeowners policy for both property and liability coverage. In certain situations liability coverage can be added as an endorsement to a homeowners policy.
Larger and faster boats, yachts, and personal watercrafts such as jet skis and wave runners require a separate boat insurance policy. For yachts, damage to the craft, including the hull, may be covered. These policies also provide broader liability protection.
A boat insurance policy may cover:
- Bodily injury - for injuries caused to another person
- Property damage - for damage caused to someone else's property
- Guest passenger liability - for any legal expenses incurred by someone using the boat with the owner's permission
- Medical payments - for injuries to the boat owner and other passengers
